#1096, "choppy sound"

I'm trying to convert my family's old home videos to digital. and I'm getting good quality picture however; the sound is choppy.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L2ApGM4Z3Q4
there are cicada's in the background, so I don't think it's highly distorted.
I'm using dvgrab 3.4 on a fresh install of ubuntu 9.10 64 bit
my hardware is
AMD Phenom 9650 (X4)
2GB memory
pci firewire card of unknown make or origin
canon elura 100 (av -> DV)

I just built this computer and had started ripping videos with my old computer and I don't think I had any sound trouble. the old computer I was running studio ubuntu 9.10 on a 32 bit amd 1800+ with 1.5 GB memory, before the bios failed

How did you convert the video before uploading to YouTube?
To what format did you capture it with dvgrab: AVI type1, AVI type2, Raw (default)?
