#3478, "Panasonic DV capture doesn't work with Kino and dvgrab."

Hi,

I have been looking around for some weeks now for a solution
to my problem.
I must say I'm new to Linux but have some experience from
work.

I started with the default Ubuntu 8.10 and Kino.
Got past the /dev/raw1394 permissions.
Then I succeeded in controlling the camera (10y old Panasonic
NVDS1)
Kino is able to control the camera over firewire.
When using dvgrab 3.4 I get Segmentation Fault.
Using Kino I see in the preview window the video running that
I want to capture,
with the important difference that it seems to miss parts of
the screen.
I see rectangles on the preview screen without any video in
it.
like this... (not exact at all doing this from memory)

Did anybody see something like this?
If I press capture the capture starts.
The icon of the dv file is garbled and when I try to play it
it crashes the mediaplayer.
If I go to edit in Kino and play the same captured file I see
a rolling picture which has also the blanked boxes on screen
(they look grayish) and the boxes remain static (on the same
place on the preview window).

I now upgraded to Jaunty and the fetched latest
libraw1394-2.0.2 and libiec61883-1.2.0

I don't know if the upgrade to Jaunty caused this, but my
sound is now also gone.
But I first want to fix this problem.
BTW I attached the same camera to my wife's Vista laptop and
"it just works".

Best regards,
Peter

Hello Peter,

I got the exact same thing. I use Ubuntu with gnome, and
wanted to use kino to grab some video I recorded with a
Panasonic camera.

First I used kino, and got the same block pattern you got. I
captured the video on someone else his Mac PC, and that
worked fine. But then I copied the raw DV files to my laptop
with Ubuntu, and I got the same blocks back! I really think
this is a DV decode issue now.

Hope anyone has a solution for this!

Regards,
Windel
